Safety Chris Banjo to re-sign with Arizona Cardinals

The Arizona Cardinals agreed to re-sign backup safety Chris Banjo on a one-year contract, seemingly completing their safety group on Monday.

The move was made official soon after Arizona agreed to terms with former Cincinnati Bengals safety Shawn Williams on a one-year deal.

As it stands, the safety room will be led by All-Pro Budda Baker, who presumably will be starting next to third-year pro Jalen Thompson. It’s possible Williams, 30, could compete for snaps — or at the least be an experienced backup.

Banjo, a key special teamer, also held up playing extensive snaps at safety in 2020. He posted a career-high 46 tackles on defense and started four games, adding a pass defensed and a quarterback hit.

He has six starts and 102 career appearances for Arizona (2019-20), the New Orleans Saints (2016-18) and the Green Bay Packers (2013-16).

Rounding out the back end of the safety room is 2019 fifth-round pick Deionte Thompson as well as special teamer Charles Washington, who was re-signed this offseason.
