GLENDALE — Stop me if you’ve heard this one before: Arizona Cardinals tight end Trey McBride has set a new franchise record.
With his 82nd grab of 2024 in the second quarter against the New England Patriots on Sunday, the third-year pro surpassed his previous record for catches by a Cardinals tight end in a single season (81).
The six-yard catch came with 50 seconds left to play in the first half.
The reception helped set up Arizona for one last score, a 35-yard field goal from Chad Ryland, before halftime.
The tight end didn’t stop there, finishing with nine catches for 87 yards. He’s now up to 938 yards and 89 receptions for the season.
McBride has been as consistent as they come for Arizona this year.
The only thing missing from McBride’s stat sheet in 2024?
Receiving touchdowns!

“That’s not the reason he’s going to get paid,” head coach Jonathan Gannon said postgame when asked if the team was pressing for a McBride TD. “I don’t know if I should have just said that, but he’s a huge playmaker for us.
“A lot of the passing game goes through him. The run game, he’s fantastic. Every play he’s out there, he’s max effort and he’s an impact player. He really is. I’m really proud of his maturation.”
Despite being the Cardinals’ best pass catcher 14 weeks in, McBride is still without a receiving score in 2024.
That hasn’t kept him out of the end zone, though, with McBride scoring as a runner and on a fumble recovery this year. Only he and offensive lineman Jonah Williams can claim that last one.
The record no one expected
In addition to setting a new franchise mark, McBride also secured the NFL record for most catches without a touchdown in a single season.
That “honor” last belonged to former Pittsburgh Steelers wide receiver Diontae Johnson, who had 86 in 2022.
James Conner moving up Arizona’s record book
In addition to McBride, running back James Conner also saw his name climb up the record books.
With his 71-yard first half, Conner now moved into fifth in franchise history for rushing yards with 3,508. He did it in 55 games.
