Cardinals release RB Trey Benson, activate Josh Sweat from PUP

TEMPE — The Arizona Cardinals activated star pass rusher Josh Sweat from the Physically Unable to Perform (PUP) list on Monday and waived/injured running back Trey Benson, the team’s 2024 third-round pick.

Arizona also signed safeties Devyn Bobby and Hudson Clark while releasing tight end Baylor Cupp and receiver Bryson Green. The team additionally placed receiver Xavier Weaver on the injured reserve.

Benson was listed as the fourth running back on Arizona’s depth chart behind Jeremiyah Love, Tyler Allgeier and James Conner. He had been dealing with a knee issue.

The running back is coming off a disappointing second season that ended prematurely due to a knee injury. After Conner was lost for the season with a foot injury, Benson took over as RB1 only to get hurt in the first game as a starter.

He finished the year with 29 carries for 160 yards and no touchdowns in four games (one start). He added 13 catches (16 targets) for 64 yards.

With Benson off the roster, Arizona’s running backs room looks closer to 53-man roster ready with Love, Allgeier, Conner, Corey Kiner and Bam Knight making up the position group.

The Cardinals will likely keep three or four running backs on the initial 53-man roster.

Meanwhile, Sweat is coming off his best season as a pro, but he’s been on the PUP list with an undisclosed knee issue. He racked up 12 sacks and four forced fumbles to go along with 13 tackles for loss and 17 quarterback hits last year.
