98.7 FM roundtable: What will the Cardinals do at No. 1 in the NFL Draft?

Apr 24, 2019, 7:45 AM | Updated: 3:16 pm

The Arizona Cardinals have the No. 1 pick and with that comes infinite speculation about what the Cardinals should, could, might, want to and will do.

But no speculation has been more prolific than the guess that Oklahoma quarterback and Heisman winner Kyler Murray will go No. 1 overall to the Cardinals, marking the second year in a row that they will have drafted a quarterback with their top pick.

Is that the right move?

We asked the 98.7 FM Arizona’s Sports Station voices and ArizonaSports.com editors two questions: What will the Cardinals do, and what should the Cardinals do with the first pick?

First, here’s what they said the Cards will do.

Doug Franz, co-host of Doug & Wolf

The Cardinals will: Draft Kyler Murray. I don’t think this was a condition for Kliff Kingsbury to agree to the deal, but why wouldn’t he have started pushing for Murray during the interview?

Ron Wolfley, co-host of Doug & Wolf

The Cardinals will: Trade down. I think the Cardinals are going to trade out of the No. 1 spot for a boatload of picks and stay with Josh Rosen as their QB.

Paul Calvisi, anchor for Doug & Wolf

The Cardinals will: Draft Kyler Murray with the first pick overall.

Luke Lapinski, host of The Rundown with Luke Lapinski

The Cardinals will: Try to make a trade, but take Murray if they’re stuck at 1. I can’t believe I’m saying this, but I just don’t know that they’ll be able to bring themselves to pass on Murray’s upside simply to draft Nick Bosa. Passing on Murray for a collection of sorely needed first- and second-round picks is a different story.

Dave Burns, co-host of Burns & Gambo

The Cardinals will: Draft Kyler Murray. Too many reasons to do it and not enough to not do it. If you’re going to go out of the box in hiring Kliff Kingsbury, you might as well go all in.

John Gambadoro, co-host of Burns & Gambo

The Cardinals will: Draft Kyler Murray. The consensus seems to be that the Cardinals will take Murray and trade Josh Rosen. I don’t have a great feel for what direction they will go so I will follow the masses and go with they take Murray.

Jordan Byrd, producer of Burns & Gambo and host of Arizona Sports Saturday

The Cardinals will: Draft Nick Bosa. I honestly believe the noise and rumors surrounding Kyler Murray to Arizona is all just a smokescreen done by the Cardinals to trade the number one pick, but after not receiving an offer to their liking, the Cards select Nick Bosa No. 1.

Kellan Olson, reporter and editor

The Cardinals will: Draft Kyler Murray and trade Josh Rosen. The combination of Murray’s star upside and fit in Kliff Kingsbury’s system is too much to pass up.

Matt Layman, reporter and editor

The Cardinals will: Draft either Nick Bosa or Quinnen Williams. I’m just not convinced the evidence is there that the Cardinals are planning to take Murray, and it’s hard to believe the rumors this time of year.

Kevin Zimmerman, reporter and editor

The Cardinals will: Draft Kyler Murray. You don’t make a trade just to make a trade, and the reality is the Cardinals should take the player they want and not trade the pick — or Rosen — if a monster offer doesn’t come across Steve Keim’s desk. This presents the possibility we end up with a Rosen-Murray quarterback battle, which isn’t the worst result.

Vince Marotta, Co-host of Bickley & Marotta

The Cardinals will: Draft Kyler Murray. I do believe the decision makers of the organization communicated with other teams about dealing the pick but were ultimately not blown away by what was offered to give it up. So, Murray will be the pick. The only intrigue that remains, in my mind, is whether or not the Cardinals are blown away by an offer for Josh Rosen before Thursday night.
