By the numbers: A look back at the Arizona Diamondbacks’ 2019 season

Coming into the 2019 season, the Arizona Diamondbacks were predicted to finish with a losing record and either third or fourth in the NL West.

Instead, the team finished 85-77, three more wins than last season, and second in the NL West.

Despite a late push for the Wild Card, the Arizona Diamondbacks were officially eliminated from the playoffs Sept. 23 in a 9-6 loss to the St. Louis Cardinals.

Take a look back at the D-backs’ 2019 season by the numbers:

The starting pitchers for the D-backs amassed a 4.23 ERA, which was the 13th-best in the league.

Of the starters, Alex Young held a 3.56 ERA in 17 starts. Robbie Ray started the most games at 33 and finished the year with a 4.34 ERA in 174.1 innings pitched.

Additionally, Merrill Kelly pitched the most innings for the D-backs with 183.1 and finished with a 4.42 ERA.

Luke Weaver only made 12 starts, but he had the lowest ERA among starters with a 2.94 ERA.

Zac Gallen was also solid for Arizona in eight games with a 2.89 ERA in 43.2 innings pitched.

Speaking of pitching, the bullpen averaged a 4.26 ERA, which was the 12th-lowest in the league.

Archie Bradley threw the most innings at 71.2 out of the bullpen. As the unofficial closer for the team, he finished the season with a 3.52 ERA through 66 games.

Between 45 players, the D-backs held a .252 team batting average, which was also the league average. Tied with the Chicago Cubs, that was the 13th-best in average in the league.

Ketel Marte held the highest batting average at .329 with 628 plate appearances. On those, he hit 32 home runs, 36 doubles and 9 triples.

The D-backs ranked 19th in the league when it came to home runs during the season. Around the NL West the Los Angeles Dodgers (279) and Colorado Rockies (224) ranked ahead of Arizona at 4th and 16th, respectively.

Eduardo Escobar led the team with 35 home runs, followed by Marte (32) and Christian Walker (29).

The D-backs scored the 11th most runs in the league this year. They averaged 5.02 runs per game, which was also the 11th-best in the league.

Again, Marte (97), Escobar (94) and Walker (86) led the team in this category.

The team tied with the Kansas City Royals for the third-most triples hit this season. Colorado and the Detroit Tigers finished with 41.

Escobar led the team with ten triples, which was tied for first in MLB with three other players. Coincidentally, all three of those players play for the Royals: Hunter Dozier, Whit Merrifield and Adalberto Mondesi.

The number 19 holds two meanings for the D-backs.

On Sept. 24, the team set a Chase Field record for longest game played with a 19-inning, six hour and 53 minute marathon.

On July 17, the team scored 19 runs against the Texas Rangers in a 19-4 win. Escobar (2), Kevin Cron, Jarrod Dyson and Carson Kelly all hit home runs in the win.

From June 18 to Aug. 29, the D-backs spent 60 games within two games either above or below .500. They finally broke the streak winning 11 of 12 games in the last weeks of August and into September. It beat the record previously set by the Oakland A’s of 56 straight games set in 2007.

When it came to challenging calls, manager Torey Lovullo ranked fifth in calls overturned. On 36 calls challenges, 21 of them were reversed.

The D-backs were hit by pitched 63 times, which was the 13th-most in MLB. Tim Locastro set a franchise record this season with the 22 times he was hit by a pitch.
