Arizona State Sun Devils add Chris Hawkins as DB coach

The Arizona State Sun Devils have added Chris Hawkins to the staff as a defensive backs coach, the team announced in a press release on Sunday.

“I am very excited to announce the appointment of Chris Hawkins as defensive backs coach at ASU,” head coach Herd Edwards said in the release.

“Chris impressed myself, Tony White, Antonio Pierce and Marvin Lewis as a young up-and-coming coach who has a very bright future in our profession. Chris played the position at an elite level at USC and the young players in our secondary will benefit from his knowledge and experience. Chris will be instrumental in recruiting Southern California for us as well.”

Hawkins spent the 2019 season as a graduate assistant with the USC Trojans, where he worked directly with defensive backs.

The Trojans secondary last season featured Pac-12 second-team defensive back Talanoa Hufanga and Pac-12 honorable mention DB Olaijah Griffin.

Before becoming a graduate assistant, Hawkins was a part of Trojan’s secondary from 2014-17. The former USC captain played cornerback his freshman year before closing out his final three as a safety.

In that span, Hawkins accumulated four picks, six passes defensed, 234 tackles and started 36 games en route to All-Pac-12 honorable mention honors in 2016 and 2017.

He also spent time in training camp with the Seattle Seahawks in 2018.
