Phoenix Rising FC has signed goalkeeper Landon Carter to an academy contract, the club announced on Friday.
Carter, 16, becomes just the third player in club history to sign an academy contract and will register as a United Soccer League Academy Player in order to maintain amateur status.
“Landon is the next player in our attempt to develop local youth players to a professional level,” manager Rick Schantz said in the release.
“The youth club has done an amazing job with Landon to this point. Landon has the physical ability to perform in training. He will now get an advanced education in the technical, tactical and psychological aspects from our goalkeeper coach, Cory Robertson.”
Carter is a Gilbert native and has previously played for local youth clubs Sereno SC, CCV SC and San Tan Legacy SC.
In December, Rising appointed Steve Cooke as the club’s first-ever director of soccer development to help start PRFC’s pro academy.
Carter becomes Phoenix’s 22nd player on the roster ahead of the 2020 campaign, which kicks off at 7:30 p.m. on Saturday against Portland Timbers 2 at Casino Arizona Field.
