Devin Booker, ‘Sun Kings’ take on Dream Team in Game of Zones

May 18, 2020, 7:29 AM

Devin Booker and the Phoenix Suns got some face time on the most recent “Game of Zones” episode.

Unfortunately, they got run off the battlefield quicker than they could say, “I don’t want to be here.”

“Game of Zones” is Bleacher Report’s basketball-centric parody of the HBO hit “Game of Thrones.” Even if you never watched the HBO series, you don’t need to understand the TV show references to enjoy the basketball humor.

A quick synopsis of the season: The Dream Team has returned in their prime to prove that the older era was better than today’s age and Michael Jordan is the best to ever play. Modern stars formed a “super super house” made of the best NBA players to face the foe.

There are no Suns players on that super team. That doesn’t mean they didn’t try to get involved.

As LeBron James and his team stepped out to the sound of battle horns, expecting to see the Dream Team approach, a group of Suns and Sacramento Kings players led by Devin Booker galloped forward on horses.

“House Sun Kings will defend the realm!” Booker’s character declares to the confounded James.

“We are a newly formed super house comprised of the best knights from House Suns and House Kings,” Buddy Hield explains as the camera pans over the group that includes Frank Kaminsky, Aron Baynes and Deandre Ayton.

“Alone, we wallow in eternal mediocrity,” Booker continues, “but together, we stand toe-to-toe with anyone!”

The Sun Kings has been a joke on the show since Season 5, when the Kings came forward with an alliance offer to a Suns group that at that point had Tyson Chandler, Eric Bledsoe and the “dragon,” Dragan Bender.

Now in Season 7, we got to see the alliance in action. Very briefly.

They readied their horse to face the Dream Team, who was approaching from the forest behind.

But before they could head off to battle, Luka Doncic chimed in.

“Guys, guys, I can’t watch you get slaughtered,” Doncic says. “Let me join you.”

As Suns and Kings fans cringe about the callback to how either team could have gotten him in the 2018 draft, Kings general manager Vlade Divac’s character answers:

“We don’t need you, we have Deandre Ayton and uh … who was the guy we took over Luka? Jaren Jackson!”

Someone corrects him — it was Marvin Bagley. Thanks for the reminder, Bleacher Report.

So the Sun Kings turn and ride off to face the Dream Team. Slowly, in reference to a GoT scene, their torches burn out in defeat, as if they just lost by 48 in the season opener.
