The Coyotes signed forward Drake Caggiula to a one-year contract, Arizona general manager Bill Armstrong told reporters via Zoom on Monday.

Arizona Sports’ John Gambadoro was the first to report that the team was close to signing the forward.

Caggiula spent the last two seasons as a member of the Chicago Blackhawks.

In 40 games last season, Caggiula recorded nine goals and six assists for a total of 15 points. He also posted 32 penalty minutes.

The forward has dealt with concussions the last two seasons that forced him to miss ice time. He was also suspended a game for a check on Edmonton Oilers forward Tyler Ennis during the Blackhawks’ qualification round series this year.

Caggiula entered the NHL with the Oilers after going undrafted in 2016. He signed a two-year, entry-level contract with the Oilers.

As a rookie, he played in 60 games, recording seven goals and 11 assists for 18 points.

Caggiula’s most points scored in a season came a year later when he finished with 20 (13 goals, seven assists).

The forward would spend half a season longer with the Oilers before being traded to the Blackhawks in December 2018. Caggiula and Jason Garrison were shipped off in exchange for Brandon Manning and Robin Norell.

Caggiula hails from Pickering, Ontario. Before his pro career, he led North Dakota to an NCAA championship in 2016 and was named the most outstanding player of the Frozen Four.
