The two starting quarterbacks playing in this year’s PlayStation Fiesta Bowl share deep roots dating back to their high school days in the Valley.
Sophomore quarterback Tyler Shough (Oregon) and junior Brock Purdy (Iowa State) played each other four times in high school between 2016 and 2017.
Purdy, who was the starting QB at Perry High School for three seasons, defeated Shough and the Hamilton Huskies all four times in the rivalry by a 255-to-158 margin.
The Iowa State signal-caller put up some gaudy numbers in those showdowns, throwing for 1,506 yards and 20 touchdowns to one interception against the Huskies.
Purdy did a fair amount of damage with his legs as well, racking up 446 rushing yards and six touchdowns on 59 carries in the four contests.
Shough’s stats were impressive, but not on the same level, as he threw for 983 yards and nine touchdowns to five interceptions while rushing for 82 yards and two scores on the ground against the Pumas.
The pair will face off for the first time in their college careers at State Farm Stadium at 2 p.m. on Jan. 2, as the 8-2 Cyclones and 4-2 Ducks do battle.
Here’s a look at the four contests that Purdy and Shough had in their high school days in the East Valley.
