Whoops: Larry Fitzgerald not retiring as of now, clarifies Cardinals DL coach

Jan 3, 2021, 7:36 PM

Arizona Cardinals defensive line coach Brentson Buckner appeared to play spoiler Sunday after his team’s season-ending loss to the Los Angeles Rams.

In a tweet that he since said was miswritten, Buckner suggested that future Hall of Fame receiver Larry Fitzgerald was set to retire after his 17th NFL season.

“Last ride with my brother. Great player, GREATER PERSON! Thanks for the memories! @LarryFitzgerald SALUTE KING!! Canton start your clock!” it said.

All that would seem to indicate Buckner knew something that the public didn’t: That Fitzgerald would soon be eligible to be voted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame in Canton, Ohio.

Except Buckner apparently left off some very important qualifiers on that message.

“Larry hasn’t made up his mind,” Buckner wrote after his initial tweet blew up. “The tweet was supposed to say, ‘If this is your last ride, thanks for the memories.’ The full tweet didn’t go through…my bad.”

Fitzgerald did not play due to a groin injury in Arizona’s 18-7 loss to the Los Angeles Rams on Sunday that ended the Cardinals’ postseason hopes.

He is in the first and final year of his current contract and said in the past few weeks he has not made a decision on his future with the Cardinals or otherwise.
