ASU basketball roster turnover tracker: A.J. Bramah rescinds commitment

Many of the familiar faces that represented the Arizona State Sun Devils men’s basketball team last season will be playing elsewhere in 2021-22.

As of May 11, the Sun Devils have lost nine scholarship players to the transfer portal, with a few likely headed for the NBA Draft.

They have taken those blows by earning transfer commitments from Marreon Jackson (Toledo), Jay Heath (Boston College) and Alonzo Gaffney (Northwest Florida State College).

But let’s take a look at ASU’s departures from this offseason, as well as who from last year’s team is returning:

A.J. Bramah, F – Transfer portal (May 24)

Bramah committed to the Sun Devils as a Robert Morris transfer with one year of eligibility remaining, but he backed out of his commitment to re-enter the portal on Monday, according to SunDevilSource.com.

The 6-foot-7, 210-pound forward appeared in 12 games last year and averaged 21.0 points and 10.3 rebounds. He shot 51% from the floor.

ASU appears at least prepared for his commitment after former Ohio State and Northwest Florida State College forward Alonzo Gaffney committed to the Sun Devils last week. Forward Kimani Lawrence, who briefly entered the transfer portal himself, is also returning to Arizona State as a bigger-bodied wing.

Alonzo Verge Jr., G – Transfer portal (May 21)

The Arizona State Sun Devils guard Alonzo Verge reportedly throwing his name in as a grad transfer Friday, per Verbal Commits.

SunDevilSource.com adds that Verge is also looking at professional opportunities.

Verge spent two seasons with the Sun Devils, taking home the Pac-12 Sixth Man of the Year by averaging 14.6 points, 3.5 rebounds and 2.3 assists per game in 2019-20.

Last year, Verge started 21 of the 23 games he played. While his 3-point percentage (33.3%), rebounds (3.9) and assists (3.8) per outing marked career highs at ASU, his overall shooting percentage (39.1%) and his points per game (14) took a dip.

Remy Martin, G – NBA (May 11)

Martin announced via a Twitter video on May 6 that he will pursue his dreams of a career in the NBA. Five days later, on May 11, he entered the transfer portal as a grad transfer before committing to Kansas on Monday if he were to return to college.

The four-year guard led the Sun Devils in scoring as a senior last season, averaging 19.1 points per game. Martin moved into second place on ASU’s all-time assist list last season, finishing his career with 466.

Martin was also named to the All-Pac-12 team last season after opting to return to ASU for his senior year after originally entering his name into the NBA Draft before withdrawing.

Caleb Christopher, G – Transfer portal (April 26)

The elder of the two Christopher brothers declared he will put his name in the NCAA transfer portal, according to Verbal Commits. Christopher entered ASU one season before his highly recruited brother, Josh, but the sibling duo will leave the program together. The announcement leaves two open scholarships for the Sun Devils.

Marcus Bagley, F – Transfer portal (April 24)

Bagley, who declared for the NBA draft on April 6, is also putting his name in the NCAA transfer portal, according to ESPN’s Jonathan Givony. This will allow the freshman forward to keep every option open as he makes his decision.

Kimani Lawrence, F – Returning to ASU (April 21)

The team announced Wednesday that Lawrence will return for his final year of eligibility that has been granted by the NCAA Division I council to players whose seasons were altered by the on-going COVID-19 pandemic. The 6-foot-8 forward averaged 8.1 points per game this past season and was second on the Sun Devils in rebounds, grabbing five per game.

Holland Woods, G – Transferred to GCU (April 19)

After entering the transfer portal four days prior, Woods announced Monday he is taking his talents to Grand Canyon. Woods transferred to ASU from Portland State last season and appeared in 25 games, averaging 6.7 points per contest for the Sun Devils. The Phoenix native worked his way into the starting lineup in ASU’s last 10 games of the 2020-21 season.

Jaelen House, G – Transferred to New Mexico (April 15)

The son of ASU’s all-time leading scorer Eddie House announced he would be continuing his collegiate career for the New Mexico Lobos on Thursday. House played in 21 games last season, averaging 5.3 points per game, two rebounds and 1.5 assists. His greatest impact was on the defensive end of the floor, averaging 1.6 steals per game, the third-best mark in the Pac-12. House only trailed Oregon’s Chris Duarte and Washington State’s Isaac Bonton in that category.

Marcus Bagley, F – NBA Draft (April 6)

Bagley saw limited time on the court this season due to calf and ankle injuries. When he was on the court, Bagley was ASU’s leading rebounder, averaging 6.2 boards per game. He announced he would be testing the NBA waters after the season.

Pavlo Dziuba, F – Transfer portal (April 6)

Dziuba, a four-star recruit from Ukraine, appeared in eight games last season. Dziuba struggled to earn playing time and announced he entered his name in the transfer portal.

Chris Osten, C/F – Transferred to NIU (April 3)

Osten followed former ASU assistant Rashon Burno to Northern Illinois, where Burno was recently named the new head coach of the Huskies. Osten appeared in 24 games during his lone season in Tempe, averaging 2.7 points and 2.3 rebounds per contest and announced he would be joining the Huskies on April 3.

Taeshon Cherry, F – Transferred to GCU (April 1)

Cherry came to Tempe as the third highest-ranked recruit in program history at the time. Cherry chose ASU over the likes of USC, Gonzaga, Arizona, Florida State and many others out of high school. Cherry missed the majority of the 2020-21 season due to personal reasons and only appeared in seven games. Cherry averaged 3.9 points, 0.3 assists and 2.3 rebounds per contest. On April 1, it was announced that Cherry committed to GCU.

Kyle Feit, G  – Transfer portal (April 1)

In his three years at ASU, Feit only appeared in 14 games, four of which were last season. Feit has not yet committed to play basketball anywhere next season.

Josh Christopher, G/F – NBA Draft (March 31)

Christopher, who is the highest-ranked recruit in ASU program history, announced he would be entering the NBA Draft after one season in Tempe. Christopher only played in 15 games and was just one of many Sun Devil players to miss significant time due to injury, as he dealt with back and lower leg issues. Christopher was second on the team behind Remy Martin in scoring, averaging 14.3 points per game during his limited time on the court. Christopher shot 43.2% from the field and 30.5% from beyond the arc.
