D-backs make multiple coaching changes to start offseason

Diamondbacks manager Torey Lovullo retained his job with a one-year extension prior to the end of the season, but following a 52-110 season, his staff is not moving forward in the same framework.

Zach Buchanan of The Athletic first reported the Arizona Diamondbacks have shaken up a majority of its coaching staff following the 2021 season.

Buchanan reports that catching coach Robby Hammock’s contract was not renewed, bench coach Luis Urueta was given an MLB staff position, pitching coach Matt Herges was offered a different role within the organization and both hitting coaches — Rick Short and Drew Hedman — will not return to the position.

Arizona Sports’ John Gambadoro has confirmed those moves.

First-base coach Dave McKay, bullpen coach Mike Fetters and third-base coach Tony Perezchica are the only remaining assistant coaches on the staff for 2022, Gambadoro also confirmed.

McKay missed most of this past season due to a long recovery process after he fractured a rib and suffered a lacerated spleen due to a dugout fall before the regular season began.

Lovullo saw success early in his tenure with the D-backs when the 2017 squad won the National League Wild Card game before getting swept by the Los Angeles Dodgers in the Division Series.

The team has not returned to the playoffs since 2017.

The Diamondbacks will have the No. 2 overall pick in the 2022 MLB Draft.
