The Arizona Diamondbacks announced on Monday the team has optioned pitcher Taylor Widener to Triple-A Reno and designated infielder Matt Davidson for assignment.
Widener allowed one earned run and two hits in 0.1 innings pitched in Sunday’s loss to the St. Louis Cardinals.
He is in his third season in Arizona and has posted a 4.44 ERA and 1.436 WHIP over his 38 game career.
Davidson has been up and down from Reno this season. He has one hit (solo home run) in 10 tries on the year.
Before getting called up in late April, Davidson led all minor league hitters with eight home runs while boasting a .955 slugging percentage and 1.426 OPS.
His big league career started with 31 games with the D-backs in 2013 when he hit .237 with 12 RBI.
The team also announced that infielder Josh Rojas is set to go on a rehab assignment this week.
He has yet to appear in a game during the 2022 season.
The D-backs start a new series on the road in Miami against the Marlins on Monday.
Starting pitchers Zac Gallen (0-0, 0.60 ERA) and Pablo Lopez (3-0, 0.39 ERA) will be the first matchup where the starting pitchers’s ERAs added up to a number less than 1 since Fernando Valenzuela faced Mike Krukow on April 23, 1985, according to Baseball Reference’s Jeremy Frank.
