Diamondbacks RHP Humberto Castellanos to get Tommy John Surgery

Aug 5, 2022, 4:26 PM | Updated: 4:39 pm

Arizona Diamondbacks right-handed starting pitcher Humberto Castellanos will have Tommy John Surgery on Tuesday, manager Torey Lovullo said Friday.

That will rule out Castellanos for the rest of this season and could have him potentially out for all of 2023, given the normal timeline of recovery.

“We stopped his throwing program and progression,” Lovullo said. “There were some things we were identifying that weren’t allowing him to move forward. This will obviously be a setback, but something that needs to be done.”

Castellanos was in his second season in the desert this year, sporting a 5.30 ERA, 1.289 WHIP and 6.1 strikeouts per nine innings in those two seasons.

The right-handed pitcher got off to a hot start to 2022, allowing just four earned runs over 12 innings in four games. In his last seven games, Castellanos allowed 24 earned runs over 32.1 innings pitched.

His last start occurred on May 31 before heading to the 15-day IL the following day. Arizona turned to fellow lefty Tyler Gilbert to replace him and have since been searching for a fifth pitcher in the rotation.

Most recently, Arizona turned to left-handed prospect Tommy Henry on Wednesday against the Cleveland Guardians as another pitcher to get a stab at the fifth spot in the rotation.

Castellanos is under team control in 2023 and is set for arbitration to start in 2024.

The injury now keeps Castellanos on a long injury list with Gilbert, shortstop Nick Ahmed, RHP J.B. Bukauskas, LHP Caleb Smith and RHP Kenyan Middleton.
