Arizona Wildcats senior safety Christian Young has found himself on a unique preseason list for his athletic prowess.
The Athletic‘s Bruce Feldman ranked Young at No. 47 on his list of “freaks” going into the 2022 college football season, which highlights players who stand out among the rest of their teammates from a physical standpoint.
The list is compiled with the aid of NFL scouts and college coaches, players and sports information directors.
Writes Feldman:
His most impressive play was chasing down then-Oregon star Travis Dye downfield. Young, a high school 4×100 relay guy in Texas, was clocked at 22.6 mph in that game. Young’s speedy wheels caught new teammate Jacob Cowing, a sub-4.4 guy who has topped out at 23 mph himself, off guard this spring.
“I was going on a route and I was able to get behind him, and out of nowhere he just catches up in like a split second,” Cowing said. “I was like, ‘Man!’ I didn’t know he was capable of doing something like that. Biggest Freak on the team? Hands down, it’s him.”
Young is listed at 6-foot-3, 222 pounds, and has played multiple positions in his four years in Tucson, including at “Viper” (linebacker hybrid), cornerback and safety.
Last season was by far his best in a Wildcats uniform, as Young finished second on the team with a total of 68 tackles — which featured 28 solo tackles and two tackles for loss — to go along with four passes defended in 12 games played (all starts).
