The Arizona Coyotes claimed 24-year-old defenseman Juuso Valimaki off waivers from the Calgary Flames, the team announced on Sunday.
Valimaki was a first-round pick in the 2017 NHL Entry Draft by Calgary and will get a fresh start in Arizona.
The 6-foot-2 skater from Finland played nine NHL games last year and 35 in the AHL for the Stockton Heat.

Valimaki suited up for 49 games in 2020-21 and registered 11 points, including a pair of goals. Injuries played a role in his stretch with Calgary, including a torn ACL in 2019.
The Coyotes also assigned forwards Michael Carcone and Jan Jenik and defenseman Vladislav Kolyachonok to the Tucson Roadrunners and released forward Alex Chiasson from his professional tryout contract on Sunday.
Chiasson played 67 games for the Vancouver Canucks last season.
Arizona begins the 2022-23 season Thursday against the Pittsburgh Penguins. The Coyotes have six road games before their home opener on Oct. 28.
