TEMPE — Cam Skattebo ran out of ways to celebrate touchdowns in the first half against No. 14 BYU on Saturday, so the No. 21 ASU tailback signed autographs after his third.

Skattebo was flagged for unsportsmanlike conduct for the signing, but the damage was done on the scoreboard to give the Sun Devils a 21-0 lead. BYU would get on the board with a field goal before halftime.

Earlier, he bruised defenders on his way to a hard-fought touchdown on ASU’s first drive to get the Sun Devils on the board.

Skattebo had seven rushes for 44 yards on the drive, which started with a 16-yard chunk run he bounced outside.

The tailback hasn’t been as heavily featured in recent weeks, missing the UCF game with a shoulder injury while watching Sam Leavitt’s passing game become even more of a focal point.

Leavitt, however, was just 1-for-3 on the drive after his first throw just missed Jordyn Tyson near the goal line, with Leavitt taking a big hit on the play.

The 10-play, 54-yard drive was set up by a fourth down stand by ASU’s defense on which multiple pass rushers invaded the BYU backfield, forcing an inaccurate throw by Cougars quarterback Jake Retzlaff.

The defense kept up the disruption on BYU’s next drive, on which a roughing the passer penalty preceded a tipped up interception. It was Jordan Crook’s first interception of his career and marked the second straight week the Sun Devils won a tip drill in the first quarter.

Skattebo kept up his hard running to convert a close fourth down early on the next ASU drive, however Leavitt threw an interception of his own (his fifth on the season) shortly after.

After another stop, Skattebo scored another touchdown on a drive that featured a breakaway run by Tyson for 54 yards, the longest pass play to that point.
