ASU football to debut sunrise-inspired tan uniforms vs. Washington

Arizona State football will debut their tan alternate uniform option that the Sun Devils will wear once, this Saturday for a home game against the Washington Huskies.

The team tweeted that the wavy, semi-cursive font and bright gold letting of “Sun Devils” — and similarly bright numbering — is “inspired by spectacular sunrises and our desert landscape.” The darkness of an early desert morning sort of explains away the mostly tan colorway here.

There is shadowing on the numbers and letters, which sit on a light earthy-toned background.

ASU’s matching pants are the same color and include a pitchfork logo on the right hip.

The most detail for the alternate look is on the maroon helmets. They have the same wave-like font that reminds of the Miami Heat’s “Miami Vice” City Edition jerseys’s font. But unlike the all-gold “Sun Devils” logo on the jerseys, the helmet logo fades from gold into maroon.

A darker maroon stripe runs down the middle of the helmets with gold pinstriping.

Maybe the neatest detail is the back of the helmet, which in maroon reads “Sun Devils” along the neck. That sits on a gold-on-gold band dipicting a landscape of saguaro and prickly pear cacti.

The initial fan reviews from a quick scan of Twitter aren’t the best — we’re guessing because of the wonky sand/maroon/gold colorway.

We’ll give credit where its due for the good looking helmet, which looks slick in a vacuum.
