Cardinals RB David Johnson an AP All-Pro at the flex position

David Johnson has been named to the Associated Press All-Pro first team at the flex position. He was also named a second-team All-Pro at running back.

The “flex” position was created this season, as the team no longer lists a fullback.

The second-year pro was the only Cardinal to be named an AP All-Pro, and his being honored comes as little surprise after he put together a record-breaking season in which he led the NFL in yards from scrimmage, with 2,118, and touchdowns, with 20.

“Me personally, I feel like I’ve grown a lot,” Johnson said of his season. “Even from each game, game by game and play by play, I felt like I was growing and learning and getting more comfortable with our offense and the NFL.

“Obviously there were ups and downs, especially with me. Mental errors killed me in some of the games. I probably would’ve had 1,000 yards receiving if not some of those routes early on in the season that I messed up on.”

A third-round pick in the 2015 NFL Draft out of Northern Iowa, Johnson tallied at least 100 yards from scrimmage in 15 straight games to start the season — setting an NFL record in the process — and likely would have made it a full 16 games had he not suffered a sprained MCL in the season finale in Los Angeles.

Johnson, who was second on the Cardinals in receptions and receiving yards, finished 121 yards shy of becoming just the third player in league history to run for at least 1,000 yards and notch at least 1,000 yards as a receiver in the same season.

Though he fell short this season, Johnson said that is a goal of his going forward.

“Oh yeah, I’m going to always shoot for that, always going to strive for that,” he said. “Always the team comes first, making sure that I know my responsibilities, but personal goals, I’ll definitely try. Especially because I was so close this year.”

Along with Johnson being honored, Cardinals defensive lineman Calais Campbell was named to the AP All-Pro Second Team. This season, the veteran finished with 63 tackles and 8 sacks along with a team-high 27 QB hits and 26 QB pressures.
