Schefter: Miami not real contender for Manning

Mar 13, 2012, 2:08 PM | Updated: 3:13 pm

The field of contenders for the services of Peyton Manning
doubled Monday when news trickled out that the free agent
quarterback had met with the Miami Dolphins and will talk
with the Tennessee Titans.

But one NFL insider doesn’t think much has changed on the
Manning front despite the presence of two new suitors.

“I don’t view the Dolphins as a viable contender in this
particular case,” ESPN’s Adam Schefter told Mike and Mike
on ESPN Radio Tuesday morning. “I just think that he’s
talking to them. I think he’s intrigued, but I think he’s
more intrigued by other options out there for various
reasons.”

Manning met with the Dolphins for approximately 6 hours
Monday, but the meeting took place in Indianapolis, not
South Florida. The former Colts’ quarterback spent
quality time with the Cardinals in Tempe and the Broncos
in Denver last weekend.

With free agency slated to get underway Tuesday afternoon
in the NFL, Schefter also speculated on whether or not
some of Manning’s former Indianapolis teammates would
follow number 18 wherever he lands.

“There is a lot of discussion in league circles that
Reggie Wayne will wind up going where Peyton Manning does,
be it Denver or Tennessee or Arizona,” he said.

Wayne has spent his entire career in Indianapolis, and has
862 career receptions, which is good for fourth among
active NFL receivers.

But Wayne isn’t the only Colts player that will hit the
market this afternoon. Tight end Dallas Clark, center
Jeff Saturday and wide receiver Pierre Garçon are also
available to the 31 other NFL franchises.

“I’m not going to say they bring in all of his former
weapons, but I think it’s a logical conclusion to draw
that wherever Peyton Manning goes, at least a couple of
these guys are going to follow,” Schefter said.
