It has not been long since Arizona State relieved head coach Herb Sendek of his duties, but already a front-runner to replace him appears to be emerging.

According to CBSSports.com’s Gary Parrish, a source connected to ASU said the job is “Jeff Capel’s, if he wants it.”

School officials have already indirectly reached-out to Capel, a source told CBSSports.com. Whether the former VCU and Oklahoma coach will take the job remains unclear. He’s now an assistant at Duke, his alma mater, and preparing for Friday’s Elite Eight game vs. Utah.

Though Anderson has officially said he has not reached out to any candidates about the position, Capel’s resume would certainly address Anderson’s desire to spark “electricity” within the program.

Capel got his first head coaching job at Virginia Commonwealth in 2002. He guided the Rams to a 79-42 record in four seasons with the school, a tenure that included an NCAA Tournament appearance in 2004.

In 2006, he left to become the head coach at Oklahoma, where he compiled a 96-69 record along with a pair of NCAA Tournament berths in five seasons. His best season was in 2008-09, when future No. 1 NBA pick Blake Griffin led the Sooners to a 30-6 record as well as a spot in the Elite 8.
