With the 2017 NFL Draft approaching on Thursday, the Arizona Cardinals may be considering going in an unexpected direction with one of their eight picks.

Aaron Wilson of the Houston Chronicle reported that Indiana running back Devine Redding worked out for three teams; the Cardinals, Colts and Browns.

The Cardinals reportedly met with quarterbacks like DeShone Kizer and Davis Webb. However, they have not had many ties to running backs in the draft.

In 253 rushing attempts as a junior in 2016, Redding racked up 1,112 yards and seven touchdowns. He crossed the 100-yard mark five times as the Hoosiers went 6-7 last season. In his sophomore season, he found the end zone nine times with 1,012 rushing yards.

Redding posted a 4.76 40-yard dash time at the combine. His NFL draft profile calls him a”garden variety zone-scheme runner who has the decisiveness and vision to operate in that offense, but lacks the explosiveness, size and play strength to make a living as an NFL starter.” However, it also says he “should compete for the third running back spot.”

This gives him a clear role on the Cardinals, who behind star running back David Johnson, have little clarity for hierarchy at running back. With Kerwynn Williams and Elijhaa Penny, there could be space for Redding to make a quick jump into a backup role.

Wilson also reported that Saints and Vikings are showing interest in Redding, as well.
