Rex Grossman brings up old memories for Cardinals

Sep 16, 2011, 3:59 PM | Updated: 5:50 pm

The last time Rex Grossman played the Arizona Cardinals a famous quote was born.

“They are who we thought they were.”

That came from the result of a 20-point halftime lead blown by Dennis Green’s Cardinals to the visiting Chicago Bears back in 2006.

Everyone will remember that night for Green’s reaction in the post-game press conference. Coors Light even made a commercial out of it.

The Cardinals are a much different team since then. They have a different coach, a different quarterback and are a franchise now with a Super Bowl appearance.

Rex Grossman is no longer playing for the Bears. He will start for the Washington Redskins this Sunday against the Cardinals.

Grossman led the Bears to a Super Bowl in 2006. “Led” may be an over statement. Football fans like to think the Bears won that season despite Grossman’s play.

After a year in the backup role for the Houston Texans, Grossman signed with the Redskins in 2010.

Last season Redskins coach Mike Shanahan benched QB Donovan McNabb in favor of Grossman, who Shanahan thought gave the team a better chance to win.

There were many critics behind that decision, just like there always seem to be critics whenever Grossman starts an NFL game. The 30-year-old, who is starting his ninth season in the NFL, just cannot escape a quarterback controversy.

Yet here he is, starting against the Cardinals in week 2, coming off a surprising 28-14 victory against the New York Giants.

Grossman and Cardinals QB Kevin Kolb spark an intriguing match-up.

Both are quarterbacks who bring a lot of speculation about whether or not they have earned the right to start at their position.

They face off this week with their teams 1-0 and after the game, either Kolb or Grossman will be 2-0 and will have silenced the doubters for another week.
