The Phoenix Suns assigned rookie Davon Reed to the Northern Arizona Suns on Thursday as he nears a return following surgery to repair a torn meniscus in his left knee.

Reed underwent surgery on August 24 and was projected to miss four to six months.

The 32nd pick in the 2017 NBA Draft has not appeared in a game as a professional. A 6-foot-6, 210-pound shooting guard out of Miami, Reed played for the Suns in the Las Vegas Summer League and averaged 14 points, four rebounds and 1.2 steals per game.

On Tuesday, Suns head coach Jay Triano said Reed was a week or two from debuting for Phoenix but suggested the rookie would begin getting into game shape with the franchise’s G League team.

“I think there will be some grooming for him,” Triano told Doug & Wolf on 98.7 FM Arizona’s Sports Station. “He still has to feel real comfortable on the floor with his injury.”

Reed could debut Friday when the NAZ Suns visit the Sioux Falls Skyforce.

Should Reed’s stint in the G League lead to a return to the NBA, he and Triano could find playing time hard to come by. Reed would be playing behind wings Devin Booker, Josh Jackson, T.J. Warren and Troy Daniels.
