Steve Nash to be honored with International Award

May 10, 2011, 7:15 PM | Updated: 8:20 pm

What do former President Jimmy Carter’s wife, the first doctor to perform open heart surgery, Mother Theresa, and Phoenix Suns point guard Steve Nash have in common? It may be long flowing hair, but we’re not sure.

What we are sure of is that they all have now received the International Award given out by the St-Boniface Hospital Foundation of Winnipeg, Canada. That’s because the foundation on Tuesday announced that Nash would be the award recipient for 2011.

The award is given to individuals who are outstanding in the health care field and/or in their humanitarian work and also furthers their passion in a way that benefits the local and global communities.

Nash earned the honor because of the work his foundation, The Steve Nash Foundation, does for children directly effected by poverty, abuse or illness.

The award will be presented to Nash on September 12 at a dinner to benefit the St-Boniface Hospital Foundation. It’s an honor the former MVP is happy to receive.

“I’m so humbled to be considered by the St-Boniface Hospital Foundation for this award,” Nash said. “I’m not sure I belong in the company I now keep on this list, but hope to one day measure up to the legacy of philanthropy and service it represents. I’m looking forward to sharing in this with the International Award committee and the St-Boniface Hospital community, visiting the Hospital, meeting some of the Province of Manitoba’s youth, and getting to Winnipeg for a great event in September.”
