The internet is a dangerous place for sports fans on April Fools’ Day

Patrick Peterson has a cologne, Charles Barkley joined the Arizona Coyotes’ front office and the Arizona Diamondbacks had a game on Sunday.

Spoiler: All of these things were false.

Sunday was April Fools’ Day (and Easter), and social media became a dangerous place for those who forgot. In the Arizona sports scene, there were a couple fake April Fools’ reports dropped by the teams themselves.

The Cardinals and Peterson joined forces to release a new “Savage” cologne. Unfortunately, you can’t actually smell like a savage, but a link to a supposed shop to buy such a thing gave Arizona fans a discount code for the team shop.

The Coyotes took their gag to another level.

They actually issued a press release that said former Phoenix Suns star Charles Barkley would join the NHL team as a special adviser.

Companies make up all kinds of positions to honor well-known stars, so there could be something believable about that until reading the press release, which detailed that Barkley would oversee hockey strategy and analytics.

The press release did included these very believable quotes from Barkley.

“Anything can happen in the NHL, and anything can happen with this team, so I’m excited to help this organization realize its full potential,” Barkley said. “At first, I thought this idea was just terrible, but after giving it some more thought, I think this could be something really special.

“I want to teach these kids that you’ve got to believe in yourself,” Barkley added. “I believe I’m the best-looking guy in the world, and I might be right.”

Over on the D-backs’ Twitter feed, the team tried to casually prepare for a Sunday baseball game that did not exist.

The lesson here: Don’t get on the internet on April Fools’ Day.
