PHOENIX SUNS

Morris won’t be great but fills a need

The Phoenix Suns have a thing for twins. That’s because for the second time in four years they drafted one.

This time it was 6-foot-10, 245 pound power forward Markieff Morris out of Kansas. It was a selection that Sports 620 KTAR’s John Gambadoro feels was one the Suns had to make.

“The reality is this; the Suns needed to get some size,” he said. “If you want to contend with the Memphis Grizzlies with their size, the Lakers with their size, and Oklahoma City with the trade they made and how much bigger they are, you have to get bigger. Morris gives you that. I don’t think he’ll ever be a great player but I think he can be a starter. He’ll come in and get the opportunity to play a lot of minutes right away.”

Although Gambo doesn’t think Morris will be great, Mark Asher thought it was the right pick with the talent that was on the board.

“I like the pick,” he said. “A junior forward from Kansas. This was the guy I thought that they would take.”

Will Morris be an impact player for the Suns? Only time will tell. One thing is clear though, he fits an immediate need in Phoenix.

“It fills a need that’s for sure,” Gambadoro said. “He’s 6-foot-10. He’s a good basketball player. He’s never going to be a guy who scores a lot of points or grabs a lot of rebounds. He is a big body. He’ll be a guy who plays right away.”
