PHOENIX SUNS

Suns look to future by hosting 2-day mini-camp

Jun 28, 2011, 5:41 PM | Updated: 7:08 pm

In an attempt to get ahead of the curve before the NBA most likely enters a lockout on Friday, the Phoenix Suns have announced that they’ll hold a two-day mini-camp (the Hawks, Heat, Lakers, Sixers and Spurs will also be hosting similar camps).

Suns first-round draft pick Markieff Morris along with rookie free agents Jeff Allen a forward from Virginia Tech, Iowa State guard Diante Garrett and Ohio State shooting guard David Lighty, will be at the US Airways Center Wednesday and Thursday.

Say what you will about the Suns front office, but this idea is a smart way to avoid some of the issues that have faced NFL franchises during their lockout. By holding this mini-camp, they not only get a chance to talk with and watch free agents they may be interested in, but also get a chance to put a playbook in Morris’ hands so he can study it during any prolonged period of time without contact with the team.

While two days of work may not make a huge difference, it gives Morris an idea of what to expect when training camp happens (whenever that might be). It also shows that the Suns are willing to be a forward thinking organization who doesn’t sit back and wait to see what happens.
