The Arizona Coyotes and defenseman Niklas Hjalmarsson have reportedly agreed in principle to a contract extension, according to 98.7 FM Arizona’s Sports Station’s Craig Morgan.

Per the CBA, the deal can’t be signed until July 1 when free agency begins.

UPDATE: The dollar amount is not yet known, but a source told ArizonaSports.com on Sunday that the extension is for two years, putting Hjalmarsson under contract through the 2020-21 season.

UPDATE: A league source said the contract extension is for $10 million.

The defenseman has one year left on his previous contract with a cap hit of $4.1 million.

Hjalmarsson, who had a shortened 2017-18 season due to injury, played in 48 games, scoring nine points (one goal and eight assists).

If the 31-year-old does sign his extension, he will join defenseman Oliver Ekman-Larsson, whom ArizonaSports.com reported has agreed to an eight-year extension with Arizona with an average annual value of $8.25 million. Ekman-Larsson’s extension is also expected to be signed on July 1.
