PHOENIX SUNS

Uncertainty, thy name is Phoenix Suns

As the Phoenix Suns prepare for the regular season they do so under a shroud of uncertainty.

No longer led by veterans Steve Nash and Grant Hill, few know what to make of the group of players the team has assembled.

So, according to Zach Lowe of Grantland.com, in a piece that divides the NBA’s team into tiers, Phoenix is one of three who are “In the Lottery, Defined by Uncertainty.”

Lowe notes that while the Suns aren’t anything close to being a disaster, as the moves that brought Goran Dragic and Luis Scola to the team were solid, and he praises the trade that sent Robin Lopez and Hakim Warrick out in exchange for Wesley Johnson and a draft pick.

But $6 million is a bit much for Michael Beasley, even if this team urgently needs an injection of creativity on the wing. Beyond that, they look like a sieve on defense, and it’s hard to win that way unless you have a top-25 overall player. Phoenix will have the cap space to make a run at one, but is the surrounding talent right, as Lon Babby, the president of basketball operations, seems to think?

It’s tough to argue with Lowe’s logic, especially since no one can say with any certainty how good (or bad) the Suns will be this season.
