Kevin Sumlin’s Arizona Wildcats suffered tough loss against Houston in Week 2, but they could be facing another loss in star quarterback Khalil Tate.

The junior quarterback tweaked his ankle early in the 45-18 loss on Saturday, but stayed in for the remainder of the game.

On Monday, head coach Kevin Sumlin offered little clarity on the status of his quarterback for Arizona’s next game against Southern Utah when he was asked if he thought the hampered ankle would affect Tate.

“I don’t know. It’s a long time until Saturday,” Sumlin said.

How much the injured ankle affected the Wildcats offense against Houston depends on who you ask.

“I think you could see early in the game, the game plan was a little bit different for him to get to run,” Sumlin said after the game.

“We stuck to the game plan. We tried to get a lot of positive yards,” Tate told the media.

Yards were not the issue for the Wildcats. Offensively, they racked up 531 yards against Houston but were forced into two turnovers and shut out in the first half.

Tate has struggled in 2018, even though he excelled in 2017. This season, Tate has accumulated just 22 yards rushing on 15 attempts. In 2017 Tate averaged 9.2 yards per attempt.
