Bobby Hurley is staying in the desert after being pursued by St. John’s. The Arizona State men’s basketball coach agreed to a five-year extension with the Sun Devils, reported Stadium’s Jeff Goodman on Thursday.

Hurley was a top candidate to take the same job for the Red Storm, where he would replace Chris Mullin, according to Goodman.

But a likely raise and a contract taking him five years down the road in Tempe likely played a part in keeping Hurley out west. He was previously under contract through 2023 and received an extension in January 2018.

Hurley, who turns 48 in June, grew up in Jersey City, only a few miles from St. John’s.

Mullin stepped down following the season.

Hurley has compiled a 73-58 record over four years with the Sun Devils, taking over after Arizona State fired Herb Sendek following an 18-16 season in 2014-15. Over Hurley’s last two years at ASU, his program produced back-to-back 20-win seasons and NCAA Tournament berths, something that hasn’t happened since the 1980-81 season under Ned Wulk.

Mullin was the head coach of his alma mater for four years, with his last game being a 74-65 loss to Hurley’s Sun Devils in the First Four of the 2019 NCAA Tournament.

That victory marked ASU’s first tournament win in 10 years, a feat that hasn’t happened since the 2008-09 season under Sendek, who himself only managed one NCAA Tournament win in his nine years at ASU.

Prior to Hurley’s Arizona State tenure, the NCAA’s all-time assists leader from his playing days at Duke coached two seasons at Buffalo (2013-15), where he went 42-20 and earned an NCAA Tournament appearance in the season prior to being hired at ASU.
