Phoenix Suns throwing it back — let’s do the same

Mar 19, 2015, 2:33 AM | Updated: 2:33 am

Thursday night, when the Phoenix Suns host the New Orleans Pelicans at US Airways Center, they will be celebrating “Throwback Thursday.”

The idea is to, essentially, party like it’s 1992, the last season current head coach Jeff Hornacek played for the Suns. Ticket prices will start at $8, while food and beverage items will also be discounted to prices of a similar era.

The first 5,000 fans will receive a Hornacek retro jersey apron, and in-game entertainment will have a decidedly old-school feel.

Sounds like fun, and it has us wondering what other parts of life were like back then.

Here’s a look:

– The average household income in the US was $30,030.00. Monthly rent was $519.00.

– A gallon of gas cost just $1.05, and the average price of a new car was $16,950.00.

– A pound of bacon would have run you $1.92.

– The highest-grossing film of 1992 was Disney’s animated picture “Aladdin.” Rounding out the top five were “The Bodyguard,” “Home Alone 2: Lost in New York”, “Basic Instinct” and “Lethal Weapon 3.”

– The Academy Award for best film was given to “Unforgiven,” a Western, while the best director went to Clint Eastwood for his work on the film. Al Pacino was named the best actor for his performance in “Scent of a Woman,” while Emma Thompson won the best supporting actress nod for “Howards End.”

– Miley Cyrus was born in 1992. So were Selena Gomez and Demi Lovato.

– Jay Leno debuted as the host of “The Tonight Show,” and “The Real World” came into existence.

– A first-class stamp cost $0.29.

– Compact discs became the go-to medium for listening to music on the go, surpassing cassette tapes.

– The iconic basketball video game “NBA Jam” was still a year away from debuting in arcades. Instead, games like “Street Fighter II,” “Mortal Kombat,” “X-Men” and “Lethal Enforcers” were popular staples in arcades nationwide.

– The NBA was comprised of 27 teams (as opposed to 30 now), and was made up of four divisions (now six).

– The current-day Pelicans were in the Eastern Conference and known as the Charlotte Hornets, a franchise which relocated to New Orleans about a decade later and kept the Hornets moniker through the 2012-13 campaign. The 1991-92 Hornets were led by Larry Johnson, Tyrone “Muggsy” Bogues, Kendall Gill and Dell Curry. The team also featured future Suns guards Rex Chapman and Elliot “Socks” Perry, as well as current Suns assistant coach Kenny Gattison, who lead Charlotte in blocks and field goal percentage that year.

The Suns and Pelicans tip off at 7 p.m. The game can be heard on Arizona Sports 98.7 FM. The matchup is crucial to Phoenix’s chances of maintaining any type of hope for the 2014-15 postseason, as the team is chasing New Orleans and Oklahoma City for the final playoff spot in the Western Conference.
