D-backs starter Robbie Ray leaves game with back spasms vs. Rockies

Aug 14, 2019, 1:17 PM | Updated: 4:16 pm

Arizona Diamondbacks starting pitcher Robbie Ray departed against the Colorado Rockies on Wednesday after suffering lower back spasms, the team said. Ray abruptly walked off after throwing a single warmup pitch before the bottom of the third inning.

Ray met with trainers and left the game wincing. Arizona replaced him with long reliever Matt Andriese.

D-backs manager Torey Lovullo said after the game that Ray will have an MRI on Thursday and is hopeful the lefty won’t miss much time.

The D-backs led the Rockies 2-1 when Ray departed thanks to a two-run first inning. Ray had thrown 45 pitches before leaving the game, 22 of which were for strikes.

Ray allowed one hit and one earned run before his day came to an end. He had two strikeouts and two walks in the outing.

The D-backs wound up falling to the Rockies 7-6 after Archie Bradley blew the save.

On the season, the left-hander entered Wednesday with a 3.99 ERA and 10-7 record. Arizona (61-59) had won six of the last seven games Ray started, as the sometimes inefficient starter had successfully pitched 6.0 full innings in all but one of those games.
