The San Diego Padres fired manager Andy Green on Saturday after four seasons with at the helm. Padres’ bench coach and former Diamondbacks catcher Rod Barajas will serve as interim manager through the end of the season.

“I want to thank Andy for his tireless work and dedication to the Padres over the last four seasons,” said Padres general manager A.J. Preller. “This was an incredibly difficult decision, but one we felt was necessary at this time to take our organization to the next level and expedite the process of bringing a championship to San Diego.”

Barajas, the Padres new manager, played 211 games for Arizona over his 14-year career. He was a member of the 2001 World Series championship team.

During his time with the D-backs he batted .212 with 108 hits.

Barajas had stints with seven different teams, getting the most playing time with the Texas Rangers.

The Padres have eight games left this season, starting with an away game Saturday at the D-backs. The team has also been eliminated from playoff contention in the NL West and the Wild Card.
