Running back D.J. Foster could end his season on the injured reserve for the second year in a row after the Arizona Cardinals placed him on IR due to a hamstring issue on Monday.

Last season, Foster injured his knee prior to the year and spent the season rehabbing. He made the roster as the third-string running back behind David Johnson and Chase Edmonds heading into 2019 and was active for six games before his latest injury cropped up.

Foster did not take a carry this year and had two special teams tackles.

His injury came at an inconvenient time, as Arizona lost Johnson two weeks ago to an ankle injury and this Sunday saw Edmonds go down with a hamstring issue of his own.

Heading into a Week 9 game hosting the San Francisco 49ers, it appears that trade acquisition Kenyan Drake will take the bulk of Arizona’s carries. Foster heading to the IR opens a roster spot for Drake, who was added Monday in an exchange for a conditional pick.

With Johnson and Edmonds reportedly unlikely to play, Drake will be backed up by veterans Zach Zenner and Alfred Morris, who were signed just this last week.

Foster last produced as a running back in 2017, when in seven games he had six carries for 19 yards and added 17 receptions for 133 yards.
