Adding much-needed cornerback depth, the Arizona Cardinals re-signed free agent Kevin Peterson to a one-year contract on Tuesday. In a corresponding move, they released cornerback Andre Chachere.

Peterson started three games for Arizona in 2019 and appeared in 14 total, a career high, before a shoulder injury put him on the season-ending injured reserve.

The 26-year-old Peterson recorded 22 tackles with two passes defensed in 2019. Six of his tackles came on special teams.

Playing both in the slot and outside, the 5-foot-11 corner provides depth behind starters Patrick Peterson and Robert Alford. Second-year pro Byron Murphy is the favorite to start in the slot, while third-year pro Chris Jones will also provide the depth for Arizona in 2020.

It makes sense Arizona welcomed Kevin Peterson back.

He and Jones impressed the Cardinals throughout 2019, enough to where the decision to release veteran defensive back Tramaine Brock was made with their strong play in mind.

From a wider perspective, the Cardinals have emphasized roster continuity this offseason as they head into Kliff Kingsbury’s second year as head coach. For defensive coordinator Vance Joseph, Arizona did not add to the defensive back group in the draft.

The hope for him is that the defensive backfield returns intact and takes a massive leap forward without the suspension, injury or roster turnover that plagued the unit last season.
