Report: MLB teams will have spring training camps in home cities

Jun 20, 2020, 9:55 AM

After a recent surge of coronavirus cases in Arizona and Florida, Major League Baseball teams are returning to their home cities for training camps, according to reports.

USA Today’s Bob Nightengale tweeted Saturday about the decision.

MLB teams shuttered facilities for an immediate deep cleaning on Friday.

Players and staff would be required to undergo COVID-19 testing before being allowed to return to the facility.

There have been reports that multiple teams had players test positive including the Philadelphia Phillies, Houston Astros, San Francisco Giants, Toronto Blue Jays and Texas Rangers.

On Saturday, Arizona reported 3,109 new coronavirus cases, bringing the state’s total to 49,798 confirmed coronavirus cases.

The Florida Department of Health reported 4,049 new cases Saturday, which was a single-daily high for the state. It pushed the state’s total to  93,797 coronavirus cases.

MLB owners and the MLBPA have been in talks over when to start the 2020 season, which was delayed due to the coronavirus pandemic.
