Ahead of Phoenix Rising FC taking to the field for the first game of the USL Championship season, players took a 15 second moment of silence to unite against racism where the team kneeled.

Phoenix Rising players also wore “Rising Against Racism” shirts.

There was no formal protest planned, but it was expected as other soccer leagues have staged similar protests against racism and police brutality.

Manager Rick Schantz previously expressed his support for the players should they choose to do protest. His only ask was that they do it collectively as a group.

Several players on LA Galaxy II also kneeled.

The players and coaches also took a 15 second applause to thank healthcare workers on the frontlines of COVID-19.

Phoenix Rising FC is the first Arizona professional sports team to return to action since the sports world was put on pause due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
