Arizona Diamondbacks pitcher Madison Bumgarner threw 85 pitches in a simulated game Saturday night as he works to get back on the mound after suffering a mid-back strain.

Manager Torey Lovullo said late Sunday morning that he had just received information from the outing. He said Bumgarner got worn down because of the hot evening, but “it was solid.”

“We’ll get together with the medical team, see how he feels this morning when he’s getting up, and then figure out what the next steps are,” Lovullo said.

Lovullo told media in the Zoom call that there were a few plans they had in place depending on how Bumgarner felt, but did not give any timeline for his return.

Bumgarner had back spasms on the day of his Aug. 9 start and was placed on the 10-day injured list the next day.

In four games with the Diamondbacks, he has a 9.35 ERA in 17.1 innings.

ANDREW CHAFIN

Relief pitcher Andrew Chafin will get evaluated Monday for a left finger sprain.

He was placed on the 10-day injured list on Aug. 19.

Lovullo said he has some optimism that the evaluation will go well and Chafin can get cleared.

Chafin has an 8.10 ERA in 11 appearances this season, allowing six earned runs over 6.2 innings.
