Arizona Cardinals release D.J. Foster, 15 other players to cut roster to 53

The Arizona Cardinals announced the release of 16 players Saturday to trim the roster to 53.

Among the notable names were running back D.J. Foster, cornerbacks Chris Jones, Jace Whittaker and Ken Crawley, and lineman Jonathan Bullard.

In total, the Cardinals cut eight defenders and eight players on offense.

The Cardinals may sign some of these players to their practice squad.

Here is the full list of players who were cut on Saturday:

  • Defensive lineman Trevon Coley
  • Cornerback Ken Crawley
  • Running back D.J. Foster
  • Cornerback Chris Jones
  • Offensive lineman Koda Martin
  • Wide receiver Andre Patton
  • Wide receiver A.J. Richardson
  • Linebacker Reggie Walker
  • Wide receiver JoJo Ward
  • Running back Jonathan Ward
  • Linebacker Evan Weaver
  • Cornerback Jace Whittaker
  • Wide receiver Johnnie Dixon (injured)

Brice, who played three seasons with the Green Bay Packers, was signed by the Cardinals in August.

Bullard played his first three seasons with the Chicago Bears before joining the Arizona Cardinals prior to the 2019 season. He appeared in nine games last year and started six.

Cantrell, who was an undrafted free agent, spent 2018 with the Los Angeles Chargers and was placed on the injured reserve in 2019. He signed with the Cardinals in June.

Coley started almost every game over his first two seasons with the Cleveland Browns, then played for the Indianapolis Colts last year.

Crawley, who has been in the league since 2016, signed with the Cardinals in August shortly after the injury to Robert Alford.

Former ASU running back Foster appeared in six Cardinals games last year and did not have any touches.

Jones played 13 games for the Cardinals over 2018 and 19, starting three games last year. Over this past season he had 22 tackles and six passes defended.

Martin was signed by the Chargers as an undrafted free agent in 2019 but later placed on the IR. He joined the Cardinals in August.

Patton made his NFL debut last year, playing 13 games for the Chargers.

Richardson joined the Cardinals last year as an undrafted free agent and spent the season on their practice squad.

Walker, an undrafted free agent out of Kansas State, joined the Cardinals this offseason.

Ward, out of Hawaii, signed with the Cardinals as an undrafted free agent this offseason.

The Cardinals drafted Weaver in the sixth round of the 2020 NFL Draft. ESPN’s Josh Weinfuss reported that he may be a practice squad target.

Whittaker impressed at Cardinals camp, but was released. He’s another practice squad target, according to NFL Network’s Mike Garafolo.

Dixon was on the Cardinals’ practice squad last season.
