The Arizona Cardinals announced Saturday that they suffered more long-term losses in the New York Jets game than previously realized.
Offensive lineman J.R. Sweezy (elbow) and Rashard Lawrence (calf) were moved to the injured reserve list. They and linebacker Kylie Fitts (hamstring) were all ruled out of the Week 6 game against the Dallas Cowboys.
With Fitts out and both Devon Kennard (calf) and Dennis Gardeck (foot) questionable, along with Chandler Jones (bicep) out for the rest of the season, the linebacker group is thin heading into Monday.
Gardeck told reporters this week he was confident he would play and was upgraded to limited on Friday even though Arizona did not go through practice.
“We’ll still have four guys dressed for the game,” defensive coordinator Vance Joseph said of the outside linebackers on Thursday. “We got D.K. back into practice yesterday obviously. We’ll see how he progresses before Monday night.
“If D.K. is full speed, he’ll play full-time along with Haason, and Gardeck’s backing up both spots. We’ll still have four guys who can play.”
Arizona also signed Isaiah Irving off the Denver Broncos practice squad this week, and he could replace Fitts as the fourth guy.
That position isn’t the only one with question marks entering the weekend. Offensive lineman D.J. Humphries was added to the injury report Saturday after being limited at practice due to a back injury. He is listed at questionable.
If he is forced to miss the game, Arizona would be down two starting offensive linemen in Humphries and Sweezy.
There is some good news. Safety Chris Banjo participated in full Thursday ahead of the team’s Monday Night Football road game.
Safety Jalen Thompson is designated for return from the injured reserve after missing most of the season, save for a few snaps in Week 1. No move has been made, though, and head coach Kliff Kingsbury said Saturday that a decision will likely come Monday.
“He’s close. We want to be smart with him and make sure he feels great,” Kingsbury said. “We’re gonna continue on the next couple days and see where it ends up.”
Defensive end Jordan Phillips was added to the injury list after missing practice to attend his dad’s funeral. He tweeted Thursday that he would be able to attend both the funeral and the Monday Night Football game.
