In response to rising coronavirus cases around the state, the University of Arizona’s athletics department announced it will no longer allow family members of student athletes or university staff to attend home games for all sports.

“This decision was made out of an abundance of caution as the athletics department continues to hold the health and safety of all as its guiding principles,” the school said in a statement Sunday.

“The department will monitor community health and safety guidelines while continuing to work in collaboration with University leadership, Pima County Health Department and the Pac-12 Conference.”

The news comes as coronavirus cases continue to postpone and cancel games throughout college football and basketball.

So far, nine Pac-12 conference football games have been canceled this season, one of which was the Wildcats’ season opener against Utah.

The Pac-12 has since approved a plan to allow schools to schedule football games against non-conference opponents should their conference game get canceled and no other conference opponents are available to play.

The Wildcats men’s basketball team has also felt the hardship of COVID-19 cancellations after its season opener against NAU was postponed and last Sunday’s game against University of Texas-El Paso was canceled.
