Arizona State football co-defensive coordinator Marvin Lewis could soon be making his way back to the NFL.

Lewis has spoken with the Detroit Lions regarding their head coaching vacancy, according to the Detroit Free Press.

The outlet spoke to ASU head coach Herm Edwards, who said that Lewis told him conversations with Lions owner Sheila Ford Hamp and special assistant to the owner and CEO Chris Spielman went well.

This is not the first NFL team Lewis has been linked to over the last month. On Dec. 23, reports broke that he had interviewed with the Houston Texans for their head coaching job.

Lewis was hired by ASU in May 2019 as a special assistant. He served as the interim defensive backs coach for the 2019 Tony the Tiger Sun Bowl and was promoted to the co-defensive coordinator role alongside Antonio Pierce in February 2020.

From 2003-2018, Lewis served as the Cincinnati Bengals head coach. The Bengals went 131-122-3 overall during his tenure and made the postseason seven times.

“I think he would be an excellent candidate,” Edwards said to the Detroit Free Press. “Of what they’re trying to do, what it sounds to me now, they’re trying to marry a head coach with a GM and a new owner, he’s got a lot of knowledge. He’s got a lot of experience that you can’t give a young guy.”

The Lions are expected to have virtual interviews with head coaching candidates in the coming days, the Free Press reported. They have also announced seven completed interviews for the general manager opening.
