Inside the Box: D-backs take series in Colorado

After every Arizona Diamondbacks game we’ll examine the
box score and
provide you with instant analysis. So it’s time to go
Inside the Box for
September 7, 2011: Diamondbacks 5, Rockies 3

The Good:

Catcher Miguel Montero continued to do what he has quietly done all season – lead the Diamondbacks to a win. He only got one hit, but it was a two-run home run that started the scoring for the game. Montero has been a quiet clutch hitter all season.

Joe Saunders didn’t throw his absolute best game on Wednesday, but he did well. He gave up three earned runs on seven hits in six innings. Not amazing, but good enough to earn the win when he finally got the run support he deserved. Saunders also helped his own case with a sixth-inning RBI single.

The Bad:

The D-backs played a decent game, but their hitting with runners in scoring position was disappointing – they were two for 12 on Wednesday. As the D-backs attempt to close the gap with the Milwaukee Brewers to move to second overall in the National League – and hopefully avoid the Phillies in the first round of the playoffs – they can’t afford a close game because they are not seizing opportunities.

The Funky:

The D-backs’ pitchers lead MLB with a combined 52 hits and 32 RBI.
