The Arizona Diamondbacks showed some resilience early on in the 2021 season.

On Opening Day Thursday against the San Diego Padres, they trailed 6-1 after Madison Bumgarner allowed six earned runs in four innings.

But in the top of the fifth inning, the D-backs would proceed to score six runs off four home runs.

Center fielder Ketel Mate got things started with his third hit of the game, a solo shot.

After first baseman Christian Walker reached base on four balls, third baseman Asdrubal Cabrera would go deep for his second and third RBIs of the day.

Second baseman Eduardo Escobar got to first on a throwing error and pinch-hitter Tim Locastsro homered to score himself and Escobar and tie the game 6-6.

Catcher Stephen Vogt didn’t let that scoreline stay squared up for that long, as he would also homer and improbably put Arizona out in front.

It was the first Opening Day in franchise history when four different players hit a homer and one more dinger would tie the team’s record of five for homers on Opening Day, per the team.

Arizona’s bullpen would give up two runs the rest of the way, with the offense not having any more left, giving the D-backs an 8-7 loss.
