The Arizona Diamondbacks released relief pitcher Andrew Hoffmann, while fellow reliever Philip Abner was claimed by the San Francisco Giants on Wednesday after both pitchers were designated for assignment.
The D-backs DFA’d Hoffmann on Monday to make room on the 40-man roster for Justin Martinez’s return from the 60-day injured list. Abner was DFA’d to make room for veteran Dennis Santana on Sunday.
The Giants optioned Abner to Triple-A Sacramento.
The D-backs acquired Hoffmann at the trade deadline last summer from the Kansas City Royals for outfielder Randal Grichuk. He only appeared in 16 major league games for the D-backs and allowed 16 earned runs in 19 innings with 19 strikeouts and 14 walks. He made the Opening Day roster this spring, but the D-backs optioned him after a month. He suffered a lat injury in June and was never reinstated before getting cut.
Abner made 13 major league appearances for the D-backs since his debut last season, and he allowed 12 earned runs in 18 innings with 11 walks and 11 strikeouts.
Arizona took him in the sixth round of the 2023 MLB Draft.
