With Arizona Cardinals coach Kliff Kingsbury sidelined for Sunday’s matchup against the Cleveland Browns after testing positive with COVID-19, assistant wide receivers coach Spencer Whipple will assume play-calling duties.

Whipple will be the one communicating with quarterback Kyler Murray, but the Cardinals play calling will be a collaborative effort, according to the NFL Network’s Tom Pelissero.

Run game coordinator/offensive line coach Sean Kugler will still have an input on the rushing attack, with him and Kingsbury normally making the Cardinals’ offensive game plan together. In addition with Kingsbury being out, defensive coordinator Vance Joseph and assistant head coach/special teams coordinator Jeff Rodgers will split head coaching duties.

In his third season in Arizona, Whipple was hired as an offensive quality control coach in 2019. The following year, he was promoted to assistant receivers coach and is in his second season in the role.

Prior to his time with the Cardinals, he spent seven years coaching at the collegiate level. In 2018, Whipple served as the passing game coordinator/quarterbacks coach at Massachusetts.

The Cardinals (5-0) travel to Cleveland to face the Browns (3-2) at 1:05 p.m. on 98.7 FM Arizona’s Sports Station.
