Dose of Venom: Anderson and Trumbo carry D-backs to win over Ross, Padres

PHOENIX — The bats were swinging early and often Saturday night at Chase Field, as the Arizona Diamondbacks handed Tyson Ross one of his worst outings this season in a 10-4 victory over the San Diego Padres.

The D-backs racked up six runs in the first two innings off of Ross.

Ender Inciarte got things rolling with a leadoff double to left field, A.J. Pollock followed with a walk and Mark Trumbo brought them both home with a single up the middle en route to an early 2-0 lead.

“I was just trying to stay aggressive,” said the D-backs first baseman. “I was on a period where I was taking a lot of walks and I was basically not trying to miss the good pitches”.

Trumbo would later score on a wild pitch thrown by Ross.

“We just want to take advantage of those [errors and wild pitches]”, said D-backs manager Kirk Gibson. “Ross came into the game having given up only 27 stolen bases, only six caught and we wanted to put pressure on him that way.

While Ross struggled, rookie right-hander Chase Anderson put together a strong outing in what could have possibly been his last start of the season.

Through his first three innings, Anderson allowed just one hit and erased 10 of the 11 batters he faced.

“Getting through that first inning 1,2,3 was my strongest,” said Andeson. “I just tried to keep the score to the minimum and just let those guys hit the ball.”

The D-backs would support Anderson in the second inning as well by driving in two more runs off the bats of Chris Owings and Trumbo. However, they also received some help from the Padres as additional run scored on a throwing error by Alexi Amarista.

“You always got to be alert,” said Gibson about running the bases.

Anderson did find himself in some hot water in the fourth inning. On a 2-1 count, Anderson threw a changeup to Yasmani Grandal, who drilled the pitch over the wall in right field.

Anderson later walk two batters — and would pay the price for it as Amarista recorded his first RBI of the night with a single to right.

Diamondback fans saw Daniel Hudson pitch for the first time in two years at Chase Field Saturday night. Hudson has been absent from the Diamondbacks’ pitching staff as he recovered from multiple Tommy John surgeries.

He came in the sixth and threw one inning of relief, but unfortunately allowed a leadoff triple to Rene Rivera, who later would be brought in by Amarista. Hudson would however, strikeout two batters.

“It was really nice,” said Hudson on his outing. “It kind of gave me chills when I was running in from the bullpen and the crowd reacted the way they I did I appreciated it a lot.”

The Padres continued to try to claw their way into contention as they started off the seventh inning with a solo home run by Yangervis Solarte off of Oliver Perez to cut the deficit to 7-4. But the D-backs would add some insurance runs of their own in the seventh as San Diego’s Leonel Campos threw a wild pitch to plate Trumbo from third. Then pinch hitting for Perez, Jordan Pacheco drove in two runs to put the D-backs up 10-4 — which would be all they needed to win game two of the three-game series.

The Good:

The D-backs sent Ross to the showers after three innings — his shortest outing of the season.

This season, the Padres starter set a franchise record with 14 consecutive quality starts. He allowed six or fewer hits in each of the 14 starts becoming the second pitcher to achieve the feat since 1986. However, the D-backs scored six runs (4 unearned) off the 2014 NL All-Star.

Trumbo had a solid night at the plate. He went 3-for-5 with three RBI, a double and two singles. He scored two runs both on wild pitches.

The Bad:

In his last three appearances, Perez has given up eight runs (seven unearned) on six hits in 1.2 innings combined.

Noted:

• In 14 of last 15 starts, D-backs starters have allowed 3 or fewer runs.

• Since returning from the DL on September 2nd, Cody Ross is 8-for-22 and hitting .363.

• On this day in 1998, D-backs starting pitcher Andy Benes (8.1 IP) and closer Gregg Olson (0.2 IP) combined for the first one-hitter in D-backs history.

• 32,429 people showed up on Paul Goldschmidt bobblehead day. Unfortunately, 12,429 fans did not receive the memorabilia as it was given to the first 20,000 fans through the Chase Field gates.

• Farm update: The Reno Aces dropped game four of the Pacific Coast League Championship as they were defeated by Omaha 11-2. Sunday’s decisive game five will determine who will reach the Triple-A Championship.

Stat of the Game:

10: The number of runs scored in Saturday night’s game against the Padres. The most the D-backs have scored since Aug. 9 against the Colorado Rockies.

He Said It:

“Hopefully I can have a career here and do the best I can to help the team win and be a starting pitcher for a long time that’s the goal and the dream ever since I was a kid.” – Anderson on his what he hopes for in the future.

Up Next:

The final matchup of the season between these two NL West rivals as Trevor Cahill takes the bump for the D-backs.

Cahill (3-11, 5.04) has had a tough time since returning to the D-backs’ starting rotation (July 18). He has given up 30 runs in 55 innings with a 4.91 ERA and is looking for his first win in four starts. Cahill is 2-4 versus the Padres in his nine career games with a 3.06 ERA.

Opposing is right-hander Odrisamer Despaigne (3-6, 3.55) who is coming off one of his worst starts of the season. His last start on September 8th against the Los Angeles Dodgers he surrendered six earned runs on eight hits lasting only 4.1 innings. His last start against Arizona he was handed a no-decision throwing seven innings with one run on four hits.

First pitch is scheduled at 1:10 with pregame coverage beginning 30 minutes earlier on ESPN Phoenix 620 AM.
